Social Web Response
Social Web Response
Through the social web class I was able to explore resources I was already fairly familiar with in an educational way. I found Diigo and Twitter to both be great resources with their group options. I do value my experience with Diigo more as it seems like a more useful resource for me. I think it would be interesting to have students in a math class Diigo different things they find. Here is a link to my Diigo a social tool that I do not have a lot of practice with. Diigo!

Technology Portfolio
Below is a link to my blog for Technology Class. It is a portfolio that displays a combination of work and explorations in technology from our class. I learned many new skills and ways of applying them to a classroom.
Social Web Response
This response is a bit late and last minute. I was sifting through my contribution of blog and responses and think a failed to post about the Social Web. I really enjoy the fun and inter-connective aspects of the web 2.0 world. I have use Twitter off and on in the past and now am using it for information on education and things that I think of and find online or news. RSS feeds seem a bit antiquated, but I still see the use- I have one on my blog for class and I like how it automatically updates information that I choose from different media outlets. Diigo I really like. At the start of class I used it to collect information I would find online and resource, but I would really like to use it for my students- especially the bookmark, highlight and capability to tweet the information. Connecting all this to a wiki or blog would be great! I am not so into Pinterest yet, but my wife who teacher 3rd grade will use it from time to time. I haven't spent much time on Pinterest, but would be interested to find high school level social studies and special education resources on there. I have been on Linkedin for a while. I'm still not super impressed with Linkedin from an educator perspective, but hope that I will soon! I think some apps worth looking at in the Social Media word are Celly, Instagram and Hootsuite.

HISTORYHere App Lesson Plan
Objective:
To help students learn about the different historical places throughout the United States using technology. HS.14. Create and use maps, technology, imagery and other geographical representations to extrapolate and interpret geographic data.
Assessment: Each student will be given a place (that they have already seen in their textbook or a lesson) that they can find on the app and create a representation of the historical significance. They can do so in any creative form they would like.

Lesson: This assignment will be built up from the previous classes. They will be going deeper into the historical places they have been learning about during past classroom discussions and readings. This assignment is meant to be a midterm or final project to work on collecting historical data, and one of those sources must be this app.
Barriers: The barriers that I anticipate will be the availability of the app to some students. However, many schools now rent out ipads that we can use in class. I would also leave time in class where students can share their devices with other students to complete the assignment.

Reading and Checking Comprehension With the Help of Technology
Through this lesson kindergarten age students will practice using technology to read stories using a technological avenue, then engage in conversation about key concepts and ideas from the story. Teachers will check for comprehension using the quiz following the story on the MyOn App.
App Lesson: Civil War (CW App)
The CW App, America's Epic Struggle was a great resource and tool for the lesson. I developed a lesson of small group research using the app, which is fairly deep in content and experience to use a the base for research, synthesis and presentation. Students are charged to become experts in particular section of the Civil War. They will be given a topic and section to be expert researchers. Using a provided rubric they will use technology tools (Chromebooks, iPads, PowerPoint, smartphone, video,etc.). Students will then present their expert research using their chosen technology tool and the CW App. Here is a link to the full lesson plan: CIVIL WAR APP LESSON PLAN

Wiki response
I enjoyed creating a wiki to a certain degree. I believe that it is good to explore all options as a teacher or someone who is trying to find useful information. The problem is that people can change some of that information even if it may not be close to the actual truth.
Social Web Tools
I enjoyed learning about these new tools. I can see using LinkedIn to network with other educators.
I can also see myself using Pinterest as I explored I saw lots of creative ideas that students would love. On Diigo and Twitter I found some interesting groups related to technology in SPED.

Google Earth Lesson
Google Earth Lesson
This lesson using the Google Earth app will be used with Post High Transition Students . This lesson will allow students to become familiar with the basic tools in Google Earth by finding locations, exploring and researching. They will learn to explore different aspects of Google Earth locally and around the world. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the processes of exploring and research by asking questions, describing, communicating and observing. Students will have an understanding of how technology, in this app allows them to see the Earth in a topographic manner which helps them identify features. Students will expand their technology skills as well as work on literacy and numeracy as applied.

An App Lesson by Terry Alexander
The app I choose is a simulator which comes from the PhET project founded by Carl Wileman, who received a NSF Distinguished teacher award, followed soon after by a Nobel prize in physics. He applied the money for both awards to this project with the objective of providing software applications that are meaningful scientific tools for teaching and learning for many topics in science. There are many simulations available. The one I choose is called Balloons and Buoyancy.
Bugs and Numbers
In my lesson plan students in a life skills educational setting will reinforce their learning of numbers and values, or in other words, number sense by using the Bugs and Numbers App. Kids are naturally drawn to technology and SpEd kids are no different. As teachers we need to use every tool available to reinforce skills that we are working on during learning times. Each student will spend 1-15 minutes under the direction of a teacher playing specific games to their learning level. Teachers will note data with accompanying data sheets.
NASA App Lesson
.jpg)
Introduction to NASA and Space
TPACK: The lesson’s goal is to demonstrate learning in technology regarding classroom content. Many of these Special Education students have limited understanding of what technology can do. Technology is extremely important to these students because it can be used as a tool for them to be more independent. This lesson should help the students develop Technological Knowledge. The NASA App demonstrates effective learning tools, such as articles, videos, TED Talks, images, interactive features, mission launches, and historical aspect of NASA. These tools will help display a different picture of who and what NASA is. The idea is for the students to explore NASA from a different perspective than reading out of a text book. The students will be able to start their own investigation to NASA just like the scientist discover space (Technology Content Knowledge). The students should begin to learn to use technology to help their learning process in discovering new ways to experience content. These student that will be completing this lesson with be High School Special Education students. Many of these students have limited writing and reading capabilities, so the application of using an iPad to discover learning about space is perfect for these students to still engage in the material. This is an example of Technical Pedagogical Content Knowledge where the teacher can use technology in various way to get the most out of the educational experience, while exposing the students to our technology world today.
SAMR (Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition)
Augmentation: The NASA App Lesson falls under the Augmentation level of teaching technology in the classroom. The students are substituting the app for using a textbook in the classroom, though they are using special features from the app that will enhance their learning. The learning has remained inside the classroom in this lesson. Though, if the students were to discover the NASA App Lesson, then communicate about what they have learned with another classroom through technology, it would help step the learning of technology to the next step of Modification. Modification is the first step in redesigning the learning to create a new understanding of technology and the content. Modification is the beginning of the transformation stage, which is where the deep learning and understanding occurs.

My Story: A writing and publishing app
My Story: A writing and publishing app
In my lesson plan first grade students will use the My Story app to write and publish and opinion piece of writing. The topic is My Favorite Flower. The writing topic isintroduced in class through the presentation of a bouquet of flowers and a whole class discussion of the various types. The students will then open the My Story app on their Ipads to write about which flower is their favorite and why.
They begin by picking their profile from the authors page and then choose the add book tab. After titling the book they start creating.. On the first page they pick the book image and begin. Each page has a green box for the text and a picture or image box. The students will write one sentence or idea on each page and then click the add a page button. After doing this several times their app will look something like this. When they have finished their writing, they click on the green done button and all is saved in a book format.
When the student is finished the book can be edited, read or shared, with email, twitter and facebook sharing options included., My Story is integrated with Dropbox so the teacher can view all of the students books
.TPAK Framework This lesson requires the use of an ipad and the My Story app and so it gives the student a hands on interaction using technology to create and publish their own book.As the students create their book they practice expressing an opinion and supporting it with three different ideas. In doing this they are working towards the 1st grade Common Core writing standards. The lesson is taught using VARK ( visual --seeing the flowers; auditory--hearing a finished story; read/write--the creative writing they undertake ; Kinesthetic--the handling of flowers) and various cognitive strategies such as scaffolding and apprenticing . The lesson plan creatively weaves the three parts of the TPAK framework into its design.
SAMR This lesson moves beyond the Substitution stage of the SAMR framework into the Augmentation and Modification levels. The lesson requires the use of an Ipad, and the My Story app but the content of the writing lesson is similar what might be done on paper. The illustrating and publishing aspect of the lesson is where it moves out of Augmentation and into Modification. The opportunity for the students to see their work as a book and the ability for teacher to see all the work in a Dropbox account, to publish the students work on the school Facebook page or to email it to a parent demonstrates an enhancement to learning

response to mobile teaching and learning
I think that mobile apps are definitely a great way for students and teachers to connect easier. It seems that as technology advances we too need to keep up so that our students will be able to be
successful.
Currently our class uses I-pads and Chrome books every day. We find this technology to be very helpful when collecting data, creating documents, looking up information for projects. My favorite app that we went over in class was Edmodo.

Safe Share for YouTube
I have to share this! Safe Share is a great source for teacher who use YouTube in the classroom. Safe Share is easy to use, takes out the annoying and sometime inappropriate advertising videos from the beginning and middle of YouTube videos. It is so easy- Go to www.safeshsare.tv., copy the YouTube url and create a better video. You can even customize the length.
The example I have here is a video from Guns, Germs & Steel by Jared Diamond (a staple in high school world history classes).

Wiki Response
I have really enjoyed experimenting with Wikis. This class has pushed me in several ways and some of it has been great. I feel more comfortable with trying technology and taking the risk. Having to present and learn something fairly foreign to me in wikis was interesting! I totally see using the format in my classroom and in the professional environment. I don't have a ton of questions, just so time to time frustration in dealing with the technology, but I won't give up!

Duolingo App Lesson
Overview

TPACK

SAMR
This lesson fits in the modification level of the SAMR model. Rather than taking tests, presenting speeches, and learning about language from a textbook, students are gaining a more immersion type experience using Duolingo. While this lesson allows for extra worksheets, test, and face-to-face conversation outside of the app, they are to be used in addition to the app if extra supplementation is wanted but the app is fully capable of being a stand alone product that enriches language learning. The features of sharing profiles with the teacher and challenging peers allows for student-to-student discussion and feedback and teacher-student feedback. The freedom to progress at one’s own pace also give students some control to their own learning which creates a positive, exciting, and inviting atmosphere to students who need the extra challenge while still allowing support to be given to those who may find it to be too challenging. This gives every student a personal quality stake in their own work and the ability to track that throughout the duration of the use of the app.Full App Lesson

Article: First Graders Create Math Story Problem with Video
Richard Schaen and Kane Mannheimer Zydney put together an article covering first graders, whom were encouraged by their teachers, creating their own math story problem that would be turned into a one minute video. Based on the federally funded project Math Pursuits, teachers allocated a week into setting up a lesson plan on how to start with the film production. To the teacher’s surprise, their first graders took to the project and the concept of adding their own creativity into the learning process. Students were graded on how well they wrote their math problems, as well as their ability to understand and reteach basic arithmetic rules in the video.

TED talk: Next 5,000 days of the web
Kevin Kelly discusses with viewers the idea of how advanced the world wide web have become within the last 5,000 days, and how the next 5,000 days we will be witnessing more progressive change that is unimaginable. Our advancement in the world wide web however comes with a downfall, the human codependency in technology. Every portal/screen that we use to access this technology is displayed in different machines, but leads to one main machine- the web.

Webinar: Small Tech Changes- Big Learning Impacts
Teachers from across the United States met up at an online webinar hosted by Beth Holland from EdTeacher (http://edtechteacher.org/) to discuss how they’ve implemented and used technology in their classroom. The idea behind each teacher was how they used different applications to support children from different learning spectrums, covering children from enriched learning capabilities to those that need more help and assistance. This is not only a great resource for general education teachers, but special education teachers as well. Different methods of assessment and curriculum were discussed amongst each other too; but, the idea that everyone was able to interactively share their opinion at real time was what made their webinar more powerful for educators.

App: Stack the States
Context: Stack the states is an educational application for Ipads, smart phones, as well as tablets and is the chosen app to be reviewed. Creators of stack the states made it so that students not only recognized the state capitals, shape of states, location, and name; but, important facts and geographics in each state. This application was made to be fun, interesting, and stimulating while maintaining a level of difficulty for students as well. It’s overall a very interactive and useful app to learn the fifty states in the US.
Objective: The objective of this having students use this map is to further their geographical knowledge of the United States. Not only are we trying to reinforce students learning the states and state capital, we want them to recognize the state by their shape, and be able to recall historical landmarks as well. It’s important for students to familiarize themselves with the country that we live in, not only does it build awareness of the country that they live in it also promotes students to learn about their own state and local geographical markers. Stack the States allow students to be exposed to these objectives in a fun and interesting manner that tests their knowledge and skills.
Preparation: I would get creative with the preparation of our geography lesson. Games, as well as trivia, can be incorporated to stimulate learning and creativity. Also, it would be vital for teachers to go through and look at all fifty states and important landmarks/historical landmarks of each state to review with students. This way, the lessons will hold more meaning and significance for students. It’s important for students to understand that they’re not learning the states to learn the states, but to build awareness of the country that we all live in and how the US came to be.
Sharing Objectives: It is important for educators to go through the primary main points of why it is so vital to have knowledge of the fifty states in the US, as well as historical landmarks of each state. By scaffolding students on the states before introducing to them the states app game, students will be able to understand the significance of the subject they are learning.
Closure: It would be a wonderful activity for each student to pick a state that they enjoyed learning about the most and creating a presentation about it. Students are expected to dress from one significant historical era that they chose, significant historical events, major landmarks (both current and past), as well as any major food and events that are held there.
Assessment: After the lessons have been conducted, after every presentation student are expected to write at least one paragraph of what they’ve learned from each presenter. This would enable students to reflect upon what was presented to them, what they have been learning, as well as what they went through to obtain information of their own state report.
App II: Splash Math
Splash Math is a math app that was separated into different levels (e.g.. Splash Math Kindergarten, Splash Math 1-5, or Splash Math 1, Splash Math 2 and so on) so that users can pick which level they wanted their child/student to practice in. The level that was reviewed was Splash Math 1-5 to ensure flexibility for users. The main idea behind math 1-5 was to help students solidify skills that they need more practice in, and to advance on to the next level if the subject area was already met. Students are then free to work on or go beyond the level they are currently at, while students that need more help can go at their own pace without worrying. This way students will not be bored and continually challenged.

Edutopia:
Edutopia is a resourceful and informative website for educators to read through and gather articles for their classroom, as well as personal reflection, with. A posted webvideo resource that stood out the most for me is the process a group of educators took to create an entire curriculum on recycling and composting. For that learning unit, educators at Montpelier High School, VT took it upon themselves to be creative and expand their methods of teaching. Tom, Montpelier’s Biology Teacher, encouraged other colleagues to collaborate with one another to create a cross- disciplinary connection on how sustainability is a vital component in our ecological and economic state. Teachers who taught physics and social studies started collaborating and joining in on Tom’s curriculum and incorporating their subject matter into the school project. The teachers willingness and creativity in creating a cross-disciplinary approach at teaching a specific topic allowed for students to transfer their knowledge to other subject matter, reinforcing what they were learning and transferring it to a more meaningful level of learning.

Social Web Class Response
Technology Review Presentation

I really enjoyed the social web class. I was initially reluctant to give LinkedIn a chance because even though up until know I didn't have a LinkedIn account, I was constantly getting invites from people who wanted to "connect with me on LinkedIn" - so that sort of turned me off to it. But, now, the changes that they have made makes a huge difference and I am looking forward to using it more. I also have been using Twitter and my Diigo account a lot to bookmark articles and other interesting things I find. I actually really value my Diigo because it is so easy to use and very handy!!! I know a few people have mentioned Pinterest, and I want to chime in on its usefulness as well. I included a screen shot of my "school" board. I use it heavily for ideas for school. I do a lot of art and sensory activities in my classroom and most of my ideas come from here.
Wiki Review
I found that Wiki's platform was a lot more easy to use and maneuver than blog. It was fun to create a new wiki page for myself and add on the links to all the other websites we've created. The part that stood out the most to me was that we did not have to embed as much HTML codes to create sub-links on our main page, unlike blogger where we had to go through a few loop holes.
Due to it's user friendly format, I see myself using Wiki more in the future to do presentations as well as creating my own professional website.

Response to Social Web class
I really enjoyed this class becuase I actually was familiar with majority of the things that we discussed in class. I did, however, have my first experience with LinkedIn and can see the potential for this page in my future when I am trying to get my name out there!
I currently use tons of different fors of social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Diigo, Pinterest, and a few others. I really enjoyed having time to explore all of the groups on Twitter. I had no idea that there were so many people using Twitter that related to the field of work that we're in! It is so cool to explore and in a sense collaborate with others when we all post things that are interesting to us!
One thing that we didn't talk about in class was Pinterest. Like other sites we have explored, Pinterest is also a collaborative site where people share different ideas, images, videos, and even recipes! I have done a lot of pinning from different sources including teachers. Just for fun, I am going to add the link to my Teaching board on Pinterest- a new site we haven't talked about!
https://www.pinterest.com/mwilson09/teaching-ideas/
I really liked learning more about Twitter and LinkedIn, and thought it was cool that we all followe each other; now we can collaborate there too! I have also found the things our classates are tweeting are really interesting to read!
#didyougetericstweet
:)
I enjoyed the class on the Social Web as I was somewhat familiar with the topics presented and didn't feel like I was playing catch up all night long! I really liked learning how to use Twitter as a professional tool. I am already using it to archive articles I have read or want to read. I am hoping to get some good information from people I have found to follow and I finally get the use of hash tags. I think its so interesting that hash tags are searchable.
I viewed the Ted Talk on Twitter and found it fascinating that the process of sending a tweet to a specific person was something that the users came up with and was not in the original ideas about Twitter.
I also was interested to learn about the updated LinkedIn. I had previously had an account but abandoned it as it seemed a waste of my time. The changes they have made gave me fresh insight to its usefulness. I intend to use its news aggregating function and feel that will be useful for keeping up with current events in education news. It may also help me find a job when I finish my degree!
I will eventually start a Pinterest board to save teaching activities and lesson plans that I like. Up unitl now I have avoided Pinterest because I thought I would spend way too much time looking at other people's boards, but i see how it could be another valuable resource for both stimulating my own creativity and finding something that fits what I was looking for.
Diigo has already proven to be a useful tool especially in my research. I love being able to bookmark a webpage without cluttering up my browser and to be able to find something I looked at days or weeks ago so easily it extremely helpful.
In conclusion, I think that I will be using each of the tools regularly both as a research or locating tool and in connecting with my colleagues around the globe.

Wiki Response
I enjoyed creating the Wiki page. I felt like I had much more freedom to be able to create a personal space with the ability to upload a wide range of content. It felt very similar to a blog but with more aspects to it. I think it's an excellent virtual space that allows students to contribute together to fulfill classroom goals. Here is my Podcast response to Wiki:
Video, Podcast, and Screen Cast Response
1) Out of all three methods that were taught in this method, I could see myself using Podcasts the most. I liked the examples that were presented of the students using it as their own talk show to present topics to audiences and giving every student an opportunity to play a specific role in the publishing of the Podcast.
2) The most difficult for me was the Screencasting. I just can't get the software to work properly which led to many frustrating moments. I'm sure if I spent more time with it I could get it to work but for now I am hesitant to use them.
3) I have no other questions as this moment.

Chapter 5 & 6 Response Question
Please respond as a New Post using a tool that you have not practiced so far. You only got a taste of these tools, but which ones might you imagine using for your professional development, and/or teaching and student learning? What examples of groups did you find in class? Share some ideas for how you might use these tools and why.

Creating a wiki was surprisingly simple. I was able to find a beginning template that was structured in a way that made sense to me and I was able to figure out how to change and edit it to create more links. I want to be able to figure out a way to add my own graphics though. But this was a good beginning in understanding how I could use this in my own classroom.
All of the posted links are different kinds of wikis.
