Google Earth Lesson

Google Earth Lesson
This lesson using  the Google Earth app will be used with Post High Transition Students . This lesson will allow students to become familiar with the basic tools in Google Earth by finding locations, exploring and researching. They will learn to explore different aspects of Google Earth locally and around the world. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the processes of exploring and research by asking questions, describing, communicating and observing. Students will have an understanding of how technology, in this app allows them to see the Earth in a topographic manner which helps them identify features. Students will expand their technology skills as well as work on literacy and numeracy as applied.

TPACK
The lesson requires the use of an IPad or computer and the Google Earth app with the goal of giving hands on virtual interaction.  Technology, in particularly this tool will allow students to explore unknown areas and plan for future adventures. The students will investigate the site to discover how to use maps, coordinates, street view and topography(technology content knowledge).  The use of technology will encourage students to find new avenues to experience content. The teacher will engage the students by modeling the activity and how to maneuver obstacles. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge is present in the various ways technology is introduced and implemented while striving to meet students goals around independence and computer skills.
In assessing SAMR using the Google Earth app substitution is seen by replacing maps with the interactive, virtual Google earth. The next step augmentation can be met by the visual engagement that Google Earth draws students into. The modification stage can also be reached by exploring new content that wasn’t available without technology but can also be stretched to reach out to redefinition if the app is used to its capacity.

Substitution
Instead of an atlas, Google Earth is used

Modification
Allows for exploration using 3D, layers, topography

Augmentation
visual engagement

Redefinition
virtual visitation
