Students at the Kindergarten age level will use the app See.Touch.Learn, to learn how to accurately sort objects into categories and strengthen vocabulary. The teacher will provide examples and then let the student answer 20-25 questions in a flashcard-like picture game to sort objects (i.e. which does not belong:pictures of apples, oranges, bananas, cat), and the app allows teachers to go back and track each student's progress.
TPACK: This lesson integrates the use of the ipad, allowing students to get a better grasp on how to use technology to supplement their learning. This lesson plan is based a little on guided discovery, where the teacher provides some direction, but allows students to figure out the ideas by trial and error. It also uses the metacognitive strategy of teaching, where the teacher develops a plan, monitors that plan, and evaluates it as well. As for content knowledge, students are using this app to strengthen vocabulary and understanding of groups/categories and sorting.
SAMR: My lesson aligns with the SAMR model, and probably falls under the “Modification” category. “This is the first step over the line between enhancing the traditional goings-on of the classroom and transforming the classroom. Common classroom tasks are being accomplished through the use of computer technology.” Not only is this saving paper in a functional way, but students are essentially doing flashcard-type work with pictures, sorting, and the teacher is able to evaluate each student’s progress later, in a clear way. Computer technology allows the teacher to provide feedback to the students later, where he/she can point out exactly how the student is grasping the concept.
