Bugs and Numbers

In my lesson plan students in a life skills educational setting will reinforce their learning of numbers and values, or in other words, number sense by using the Bugs and Numbers App.  Kids are naturally drawn to technology and  SpEd kids are no different.  As teachers we need to use every tool available to reinforce skills that we are working on during learning times.  Each student will spend 1-15 minutes under the direction of a teacher playing specific games to their learning level.  Teachers will note data with accompanying data sheets.

TPACK:

Technology: While we are using the technology of Ipads that have this App to practice and cement newly learned skills, no sharing with other students in other classrooms would occur in the use of this App since it is not technically a web 2.0 tool.

Pedagogy: Developmentally appropriate practice combined with experiential practice.  As teachers, we take into account the development of our students in our Special Education classroom and create curriculum or lessons that match their level of development.  As we create a developmentally appropriate lesson, we then allow our students to use experience by applying what they have learned.  In the case of using this app, we have spent time learning numbers, their values and identification which is then applied during the use of the app. This app definitely reinforces what they have learned during group and one on one learning.

Content: Teachers will need to know their numbers, values and be able to match and identify them.  They will also need to know how to teach this using several different methods to our students who each learn differently.

Using the app instead of manipulatives to practice number sense skills
The app has several different ways or games to practice number sense rather than just using cubes or flash cards.
One of the games had students looking for a specific number of bugs.  The students have to use their finger to move things out of the way in order to find them.  This takes the task of counting and modifies it into a task that captures attention and makes counting more interesting.
Does not fall under this category.
