My Technology Review Prezi!

Journal Article
Poss, Beth (2014). Seeing AT Through a UDL Lens. Learning and Leading Through Technology, 41, 42-43. Retrieved from Tech article

This Journal Article discusses how using the Universal Design Framework and Assistive Technology can break down barriers to student learning.  Common Core Standard don’t say how teachers should teach, just what needs to be taught. Using AT in its many forms will allow all students to access the material, for example, digital media which screen readers can read to the student. Using the framework and allowing all different kinds of learners (visual, auditory, etc.) will in turn help students to meet the CCS goals.

Ted Talk Video:
Kelly, Kevin (2009). TED: Technology’s Epic Story [video] Retrieved from  Ted Talk

In his TED Talk, Kevin Kelly gives us  a quick rundown of the history of technology.  He takes us all the way back to a time where if we didn’t have even the simplest of technology, the human race would cease to exist.  Early humans had the first forms of technology in their simple tools and scrapers that they used to hunt and gather food.  Very quickly, with even this limited type of technology humans were able to affect the world’s ecosystem.  He further explains that technology is anything useful invented by a human mind and that technology will become more energy dense in the future.

Richardson, Will (2013). Personal Learning Networks: Using the Power of Connections to Transform Education [video] Retrieved from The Center for Learning
In his webinar, WIll Richardson introduces his audience to the world of Personal Learning Networks or PLN. PLN’s grow out of the passions we want to learn about.  We interact with others that share the same passion and create networks to continue learning.  We also need to prepare our students for the abundance of information available and PLN’s can do that by helping to curate that information.

App
  1. Little Bit Studio (Dec. 2012). Bugs and Numbers [App] Little Bit Studio
Objective: Recognize and be able to correlate groups of objects to a number.  K.CC.A Know number names and the count sequence.
Assessment:  Each activity that the student completes successfully is represented by a lit up bug.  While the student is working on the Ipad, a teacher or assistant will monitor the progress and I will note the completion of each level on data sheets.
Teaching Lesson: Before using the app we will review our numbers and do some quick matching of numbers and groups.  Using the app I will direct the student I am working with to the Diner tap and count activity.  In this activity we will count bugs and tap on the representative number.
Barriers to student learning: Sometimes our students might not have the manual dexterity and ability to quickly count the number of bugs and find the corresponding number.  Some of the other activities in the app require quick thinking which might be hard for  the population of students I serve.

2. Giggle Lab (May 2013) I Write Words [App] Giggle Lab

I Write Words is a great app for helping students to cement their writing skills.  It has a strong interactive interface which allows the student to connect and receive feedback quickly.  It is great for students who are lacking fine motor skills so that they easily practice writing without the stress that comes from using pencils and paper.

Organization Website:
Edutopia’s main purpose is to provide a place for teachers to come and learn about how to implement new strategies into their teaching.  It emphasizes project based learning, integrated studies, assessment, social and emotional learning and technology and teacher development. Users can access videos, blogs and articles that discuss talk about research based best practices in education. This is a site full of new ideas to energize and strengthen any teachers’ skills.  I particularly like the breadth of Special Education articles and tie ins to mainstream learning.
